UNDERSTANDING THE FLUE OPTIONS FOR YOUR NEW GAS FIREPLACE
Gas fires come with various flue options but, whilst there is extensive choice, a lot will depend on the layout and build of your property:
- Conventional Flues (requiring a chimney)
- Balanced Flues (requiring an outside wall)
- Flueless (providing the space meets min. room size requirements and has sufficient air vents)
Many customers seek gas fires to be installed within a regular fireplace opening of 16” x 22”.
For properties with existing chimneys, it may be possible to install your new gas fire without a flueliner, subject to the condition and testing of the chimney – which is always carried out by one of our Gas Safe-registered engineers.
For properties with no chimney, a balanced flue or flueless fire option could prove to be the answer. Balanced flue fires generally need to be sited on an external wall although this is not always essential. Meanwhile flueless fires can be situated practically anywhere, subject to an appropriate gas supply.
The team at RFC Services are happy to discuss your installation options at length as part of a free home survey or an appointment at our Ipswich showroom.

GAS FIRE & STOVE FAQs
What type of gas can I use for my gas fire or stove?
Gas fires and stoves typically run on natural gas or propane. Always check your appliance’s manual for the recommended fuel type.
Are gas fires and stoves safe?
Yes, gas fires and stoves are safe when installed and used correctly. They must be fitted with a carbon monoxide (CO) alarm and regularly serviced by a Gas Safe registered engineer (in the UK) to ensure safe operation.
Do gas fires and stoves heat a room well?
Yes, gas fires and stoves are very efficient heaters. They come in a variety of heat outputs to suit the size of your room.
Do gas fires and stoves require a chimney?
There are two main types of gas fires:
- Flued gas fires: These require a chimney or flue to vent combustion products.
- Balanced flue gas fires: These vents directly through an exterior wall, making them suitable for homes without a chimney.
Gas stoves typically do not require a chimney, but they do need proper ventilation.
